- Lt.-Col. Sir James Murray 2nd Duke of Atholl was born on 28 September 1690 at Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland. He was the son of Sir John Murray 1st Duke of Atholl and Lady Catherine Hamilton.
He married firstly Jane Frederick daughter of Thomas Frederick and Leonora Maresco on 28 April 1726. He married secondly Jean Drummond daughter of John Drummond 10th of Lennoch on 7 May 1749 at Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland. He died on 8 January 1764 at age 73 at Dunkeld Perthshire Scotland without surviving male issue. He was buried at Inveresk Scotland.
Lt.-Col. Sir James Murray 2nd Duke of Atholl gained the rank of Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1712 in the service of the a Grenadier Company in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 1st or Royal Scots Regiment of Foot. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Perthshire between 1715 and 1724.2 In 1733 he obtained an Act of Parliament that the attainder of his brother William only extended to William and his heirs not the heirs male of his father. He held the office of a Representative Peer [Scotland] in 1733. He held the office of Lord Privy Seal [Scotland] between June 1733 and 6 April 1763. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 31 January 1733/34. He was invested as a Knight Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 11 February 1733/34. In 1736 he inherited the Sovereignty of the Isle of Man from his grandmother. He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Strange [E. 1628] on 1 February 1735/36. In 1746 he accompanied the Duke of Cumberland to Scotland. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Murray Balvany and Gask [S. 1676] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Balwhidder Glenalmond and Glenlyon co. Perth [S. 1703] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Murray Balvenie and Gask co. Perth [S. 1703] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Marquess of Athole [S. 1676] on 9 July 1746.2 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Duke of Atholl co. Perth [S. 1703] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Marquess of Tillibardin co. Perth [S. 1703] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Strathtay and Strathardle co. Perth [S. 1703] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 5th Lord Murray Gask and Balquhidder [S. 1628] on 9 July 1746. He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Murray of Tullibardine [S. 1604] on 9 July 1746.2 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Atholl [S. 1629] on 9 July 1746.2 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Tullibardine [S. 1676] on 9 July 1746.
